What Is an Optical Cavity?

An optical cavity is a photon-confinement structure used to control and restrict the propagation of light. By managing the path of light within a cavity, it can enhance light–matter interaction and support improvements in optical output, energy efficiency and sensitivity. E-VITY’s high-stability open optical cavity technology is designed to reduce the effects of light leakage and alignment errors, providing an efficient, stable and cost-effective solution for precision optics and industrial applications.

Problem

Key features

Prior optical cavities, such as plano and spherical designs, often suffer from low stability due to factors like light divergence, surface imperfections, and misalignment, leading to significant light leakage. This instability requires complex and expensive integration, which restricts applications mainly to the precision optics application.

Superior tolerance to light divergence and misalignment

Low-cost integration compared with conventional cavities

Patent

Open Optical Cavity

A two-mirror assembly, which includes a first mirror; a second mirror located away from the first mirror; and an open cavity formed between the first mirror and the second mirror. Various open cavities designs are also proposed. Embodiments of the invention provide open cavities that are stable cavities including Direct Injection Stability and Real Ray Stability.
